The tested instance was the third version of the prototype (SN3) of the Starship spacecraft, which is designed to fly to Mars. For SN3, we prepared a test program both on site and in flight.

To begin with, the prototype should have been filled with liquid nitrogen to check how it will behave at a low temperature typical of space. However, failure already happened at this stage: SN3 was torn into several parts.

Elon Musk in his twitter noted that the cause of the failure could be an error in the configuration of the test.

This is the third time that Starship prototypes have failed. In February, a similar incident occurred with the SN1 prototype, and last November with the Mk1 prototype.

According to NASA’s plans, the first manned flights to the Red Planet should begin in the mid-2030s.
