MOSCOW, (BM) – Multipurpose nuclear submarines “Ash” sent to the Arctic. Of the seven submarines that will enter the Navy, five will be deployed to the Northern Fleet, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing news agency Izvestia.
In their arsenal are the Caliber cruise missiles and the Zircon hypersonic missiles. A base will be built for ships protected from the enemy – it will have all the necessary infrastructure for carrying out combat duty.
Experts note that Ashwood will seriously strengthen the state’s defense capabilities. If necessary, they will take control of the entire Atlantic and even the east coast of the United States.
The military department approved the final plan for the deployment of the latest multi-purpose cruise missile nuclear submarines (SSGN) project 885M Yasen-M, sources in the Defense Ministry told Izvestia. Five of them will be sent to the Northern Fleet.
Multipurpose ASM-Yasen-M submarines are capable of solving a wide range of combat missions, said Igor Kurdin, chairman of the St. Petersburg Submariners Club, first-rank captain of the reserve.
“Boats will seriously strengthen the Navy. They will be responsible for the fight against aircraft carrier groups (AUGs), monitor enemy submarines with strategic weapons, and strike at important ground targets,” an expert told Izvestia. “The Northern Fleet’s nuclear submarines, in particular, will have to restrain the potential enemy’s aircraft carriers. A ship carrying up to 90-100 aircraft, some of which have nuclear weapons, cannot be close to their shores. Ashenes have torpedo-missile weapons, which will solve this problem. And the patrol areas of the AUG are well known, as well as methods of dealing with them. “
In addition, Yaseni-M are low-noise and have a large modernization reserve, which will allow them to remain in the fleet for a long time, the expert said.
The Navy evens out the balance of distribution of multi-purpose attack boats, which are designed to combat AUG, between the Northern and Pacific fleets, military expert Dmitry Boltenkov noted.
“Now the Pacific Fleet has five nuclear multi-purpose submarines of Project 949A Antey, two of which are under modernization,” the specialist emphasized.
“After completion of work, they will carry modern Caliber, Onyx and Zircon missiles. At the same time, only three of these boats remain on the Northern Fleet. It turns out that there is the possibility of meeting aircraft carriers and convoys of a potential enemy in the western and northern strategic directions. New submarines will also be able to keep track of all of Europe, the Atlantic and even the east coast of the United States.”
The multipurpose submarines of Project 971 Schuka-B, which are part of both fleets, are nevertheless more suitable for hunting enemy nuclear submarines, the expert concluded.
Now the Northern Fleet includes the multi-purpose nuclear submarine Severodvinsk, the lead ship of project 885 Ash. It was adopted in 2014, after which the shipbuilders took a short pause in order to break in the equipment. However, in the next two years, the Navy should strengthen several more modified ships of the 885M Yasen-M project. In the construction of boats, when compared with Severodvinsk, they use a more modern elemental base, as well as improved equipment and materials.
Their nuclear reactor is made according to a new technology, in which the pipelines of the primary coolant are placed in the reactor vessel. This arrangement significantly reduces the likelihood of accidents and radiation exposure of the crew. Especially for the boats of this project, a unique multi-purpose information management system for monitoring the level of radioactive radiation and warning the crew about its excess has been created.
The life of the reactor without recharging is about 25-30 years, which is comparable with the life of the submarine.
Armed and very dangerous
From a design point of view, the architecture of the Ashen building is revolutionary. Traditionally, Russian nuclear submarines were created as double-circuit ones – a sturdy hull is placed inside the lung. However, “Ash” has a one and a half architectural and constructive type – on most of its length are single-hull sections.
Another feature is the location of eight 533-mm torpedo tubes behind the compartment of the central post. They can be fired as torpedoes, including anti-submarine, and missiles. This allows you to easily combine weapons.
Ashen-M also has 10 vertical shafts, each of which houses several winged Onyx, Zircons, or Calibers.
The latter are the basis of the submarine’s striking power. They are extremely effective in strikes not only on surface, but also on ground targets – the firing range is more than 1.5 thousand km. These missiles loudly declared themselves after they launched attacks from the Caspian and Mediterranean seas on targets in Syria.
Anti-ship (RCC) supersonic Onyx are primarily designed to combat surface naval groups and single ships in conditions of strong fire and electronic countermeasures, as well as for strikes against ground targets.
In the future, boats should receive hypersonic anti-ship missiles Zircon. These missiles can accelerate to 8 Machs and hit targets at ranges up to 500 km. They will break through any air defense. The speed of Mach 2.5 is the limit for modern air defense systems, and missiles simply will not be able to catch up with the Zircons.
“Ash-M” capable of not floating to the surface, to strike at surface ships and submarines of the probable enemy, to hit stationary ground targets. And also covertly set minefields. However, the nuclear submarines can launch a missile attack in the surface position, even being at the base next to the mooring wall.
Now, for the submarine fleet, land infrastructure and auxiliary vessels are actively being built. In particular, in Vilyuchinsk, the creation of a protected dock for loading ballistic missiles is being completed for the Northern Fleet, and shipbuilders are working on the Akademik Makeev armament transport.
Earlier, Izvestia wrote that the strategic missile carriers of the Borey project will be sent to the Far East. Of the eight submarines already laid down, five will be transferred to Pacific Fleet. Moreover, almost all of them belong to the latest project 995A Borey-A. Thus, the Navy began to restore the Far Eastern submarine nuclear arsenal, which was actually lost 30 years ago.
