BEIJING, (BM) – According to Inosmi with reference to Sohu, there are significant reasons why many states intend to buy the S-400, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing the magazine Russian Weapon.
The fact is that the range of this Russian air defense system is up to 400 kilometers, which similar ground-to-air missile systems produced in other countries cannot offer. The Russian complex is also capable of intercepting ballistic missiles at a greater range than US complexes.
The publication notes that China has its own Hongqi-9 (HQ-9) air defense systems, but their production is too expensive. Meanwhile, the S-400 is not only cheaper than the Hongqi-9. It is more advanced and practical than the S-300, which also purchased China.
The author of the material does not hide another goal of acquiring foreign air defense systems: they will allow Chinese developers to better explore other people’s technologies and experience. In the future, the acquired knowledge can be useful for the production of their air defense systems.
The advantage of long-range S-400 is also called the ability to destroy enemy AWACS aircraft, which will complicate the enemy as the conduct of hostilities, and espionage from long distances.
That is, the Russian complex will make it possible to cover and control the peripheral areas around China. The Diaoyu Islands are cited as an example.
It is especially noted that if China has an S-400, the U.S. Air Force will be careful not to approach its airspace.
The Turkish purchase of S-400 missile systems
BulgarianMilitary.com recalls that Turkey is the first NATO member country purchased the Russian air defense system S-400. On October 23, 2019, Rosoboronexport announced that Russia had fulfilled this contract ahead of schedule by supplying Turkey with all the elements of the S-400 systems, including missiles.
We recall that Russia and Turkey will start joint production of S-400 defense system and transfer of technologies, according head of the Turkish Defense Industry Directorate Ismail Demir statement on December 14, 2019.
The news about the Russian-Turkish talks on the purchase of S-400 systems first came in November 2016. The Russian side confirmed that the contract had been signed on September 12, 2017. Concurrently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Ankara had made an advance payment.
The first shipment of a Russian missile defense system has arrived in Turkey on July 12, 2019.
The S-400’s deal between Russia and Turkey was seriously criticized by NATO allies and the US President Donald Trump.
On December 12, 2019, members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate voted to adopt a package of sanctions against Turkey over Ankara’s operation in northeastern Syria and the purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems.
The Indian purchase of S-400 missile systems
By the end of 2024, Russia will supply India with all the contracted S-400 air defense systems, said Dmitry Shugaev on March 16 this year, head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTS) in an interview with Interfax.
It was officially reported that at the beginning of October 2018, on the sidelines of the Russian-Indian negotiations at the highest level, a contract was signed for the supply of S-400 Triumph air defense systems to India (Almaz-Antey Concern East Kazakhstan Joint-Stock Company). India will receive five regiment sets of S-400.
