MOSCOW, (BM) – Russian ships received “invisible air defense.” The corvettes of the Vasily Bykov project learned to direct the S-350 Vityaz and S-400 Triumph missile systems onto enemy planes or helicopters, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Izvestia.
When striking, air defense systems become hidden, since until the very moment of the attack they do not include radars. Thus, the air object will be destroyed even before the crew realizes that it was caught in the sight. Experts note that the new tactics will increase the efficiency and survival of anti-aircraft installations.
Corvettes of project 22160 “Vasily Bykov” can combine several anti-aircraft systems into a single fire circuit. Their automated control system (ACS) independently identifies the goals and distributes between the S-350 and S-400, located at the positions. In the future, small missile ships of project 22800 Karakurt will get similar opportunities, sources in the Ministry of Defense told Izvestia.
Due to the new tactics, corvettes will be able to quickly increase the area of the radar field in the sea and coastal areas, said Alexander Gorkov, former head of the anti-aircraft missile forces of the Russian Air Force.
“Ships will help air defense calculations to detect the enemy in advance, determine the degree of threat and competently meet him,” the expert told Izvestia.
This will increase not only the efficiency of ground anti-aircraft systems, but also their survival. Corvettes will be useful in creating local naval air defense areas. In this case, all the complexes on board the squadron or naval detachment are controlled by one automated control system, which makes it possible to correctly distribute targets and choose means of destruction.
For the first time, naval air defense was organized along a similar principle during the Second World War. Then separate ships with a radar advanced forward, which gave time to the main group to prepare for the enemy’s strike, military historian Dmitry Boltenkov noted.
“In 1982, during the battles for the Falkland Islands, the British fleet allocated two such groups of ships,” he said. “But then there were some losses. Sheffield destroyer was sunk by Argentinean aircraft.”
Now the tactics of warfare against planes, helicopters and missiles can be adjusted. First, the corvette radar will detect aircraft, and also specify their location, altitude, speed and course. Further, the automated control system will determine the value of objects based on information from an electronic database where the main parameters of the aircraft are recorded – it will allow to correctly identify the goals.
Then all the information received will be transmitted to the S-350 and S-400. Data will be exchanged in real time: modern electronics can instantly process large amounts of information.
Air defense systems will include radars that “highlight” the target at the last moment. Because of this, the pilots of the planes and helicopters of the likely enemy will not have time to choose the tactics of counteraction – for example, to use anti-radar missiles.
The capabilities of the Vasily Bykov project corvettes made using stealth technologies make them good scouts. Due to the angular contours of the superstructure and the protection of the upper deck, ships become invisible with a special radio-transparent composite material. Fast, relatively compact, with a length of 94 m and a displacement of 1800 tons, they are able to stay away from the coast for up to two months.
Corvettes detect targets using radar. Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be based on ships and one Ka-27, Ka-29, or Ka-52K Katran helicopter — a separate hangar is built for them. Drones allow you to conduct covert surveillance within a radius of hundreds of kilometers, which seriously expands intelligence capabilities. Moreover, the enemy is very difficult to detect a small UAV.
The anti-aircraft weapons of the corvettes are not their greatest strength. For this, it is planned to use the AK-176MA artillery mount, Igla-S MANPADS and electronic suppression equipment.
Initially, the corvettes were designed to carry out services for the protection of territorial waters, to prevent smuggling, as well as to search for and provide assistance to victims of emergency. But in the end, the fleet received a universal ship.
Corvettes of the Vasily Bykov project can deliver a powerful blow to the enemy’s naval forces. Their main feature is in a modular system, it allows you to install a wide variety of weapons, if necessary, in particular additional Caliber-NK missiles.
In wartime, corvettes will be responsible for the protection of communications, naval bases and coastal areas. At the same time, their characteristics and missile weapons allow them to conduct combat operations thousands of nautical miles from their native shores.
Close attention is now being paid to air defense. In particular, the two Stroy and Retive ships under construction for the Navy will be equipped with the unique Zaslon radar system. It is capable of detecting surface, land, sea and air targets within a radius of 75 km. At the same time, the geography of the Baltic and Black Seas allows the new RLC to keep an eye on the military bases of several European NATO countries at once.
