The Finnish military will not take part in NATO maneuvers, which are supposed to take place from March 9 to 19 in the territory of neighboring Norway, in the Troms region. The reason for this was the epidemic of coronavirus.
“The participation of the Armed Forces (Finland -“ NVO ”) in the Cold Response exercises conducted by the Norwegian armed forces … was canceled due to the situation with coronavirus,” the Finnish Defense Ministry said in an official statement.
It is reported that up to 15 thousand military personnel of the armies of ten countries should take part in the exercises as planned. From Finland, 400 soldiers were supposed to go to a neighboring country, but as they say, a person assumes – and God disposes.
At the beginning of this week, Norway called on its NATO allies to carefully check all soldiers who were to take part in the above maneuvers for the presence of a coronavirus in order to prevent a potential large-scale epidemic in NATO forces.
But, most interestingly, it was in the Norwegian army that about 1300 people infected with coronavirus were found, all the sick were quarantined at the Skold base, located in the Troms region. The personnel in this base are expected to skip the Cold Response exercises. US military personnel stationed in Europe, from the composition who is going to participate in the exercises, also suffered from coronavirus.
