Damascus says Israeli airstrikes target bases near Homs, southern Syria

Damascus said early Thursday that Israel was carrying out airstrikes in central and southern Syria and that its air defenses had engaged the missiles.

The state-run SANA news agency said “our air defense confronted an Israeli missile attack in the southwest of Quneitra province” in the south and also an area in the center of the country. Quneitra is just over the border with the Israeli Golan Heights.

SANA quoted a military source saying that at 12.30 am on Thursday (2230 GMT Wednesday) “our air defense observed Israeli warplane movement… several missiles were fired towards the central region.

“The hostile missiles were immediately dealt with, and were successfully confronted, none was able to reach its target.” Syria routinely and falsely claims to have intercepted Israeli missiles.

In mid-February, Israeli strikes on Damascus airport killed seven Syrian and Iranian fighters, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor.

US army translator accused of sharing secrets with Hezbollah

A US army translator was recently arrested in a US army base in Iraq after being accused of giving highly sensitive classified information to a Lebanese citizen close to the Hezbollah terrorist group.

The information that she is accused of transmitting allegedly contains, “sensitive national defense information, including the names of individuals helping the United States, to a Lebanese national located overseas,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers.

Mariam Taha Thompson worked at a special operation’s facility in Erbal, Iraq since mid-December 2019 as a contracted linguist.

After the US conducted an airstrike on Hezbollah’s weapon depots and command centers in Iraq and Syria on December 30, Thompson accessed files to eight spying sources, to which her work made a “notable shift,” according to documents released in the initial hearing held on Wednesday.

For the next six weeks she continued to access secret government files that contained the names of the intelligence source, according to a report by The New York Times.

A list in Arabic containing the names of intelligence sources, as well as warning to a military target affiliated with Hezbollah, was found in her mattress by the FBI on February 19.

Russian submarine drill

The crews of two Russian diesel-electric submarines began to practice combat training in the Black Sea as part of military exercises. This was reported on March 4 by REN TV with reference to the press service of the Black Sea Fleet.

Submariners carry out a series of actions when immersed to various depths, including conduct shipboard exercises and improve the training of personnel. In addition to this, crews learn to control the submarine during a standard or emergency ascent.

On the eve of the website of the Black Sea Fleet, information appeared about the start of the All-Army Diving Specialists Competition in Sevastopol, in which diving teams will demonstrate their skills in performing work in confined spaces, helping an emergency surface ship, etc.

Two warships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, equipped with Caliber-NK cruise missiles, began moving through Turkish straits to the Syrian coast on February 28. The ships made a planned transition from Sevastopol to join the permanent group of the Navy of Russia in the Mediterranean Sea.
