A Turkish official who closely monitors Turkey’s efforts to acquire air defense systems spoke to Defense News. “The West’s reluctance to share technology for political reasons is forcing Turkey to turn to alternative technologies in countries with which it has no political problems,” he said. “Especially in Russia.”
Turkish official statement about S-500
The Turkish official did not talk about the details of the negotiations between Russia and Turkey about the S-500, but emphasized: “Everything is going well, as planned.”
“In Ankara, there is an understanding that it is necessary to use all the opportunities for obtaining Russian technologies, while our Western allies deprive us of such technologies,” the Turkish diplomat said. “And this also applies to the S-500 system.”
Last year, Turkey received two S-400 air defense batteries as part of a $ 2.5 billion deal. This step, despite objections from the United States and NATO, served as the reason for the exclusion of Turkey from the F-35 combat fighter program.

S-500 “Prometheus”
December 28, Russia announced that in 2020 tests of the S-500 Prometheus air defense system will begin. It is noted that the maximum range of the system will be 600 kilometers when hovering on ballistic missiles and 500 kilometers for other air threats. The S-500 can simultaneously hit ten ballistic hypersonic targets.
