Alaui said that negotiations are underway, but “have not signed contracts yet.” According to the parliamentarian, Iraq “needs to get these missiles.” He pointed out that the United States “disappointed” Iraq many times, since it did not help to obtain the “necessary weapons.”

A representative of Iraq visited Russia to discuss the S-400 three months ago, but negotiations were postponed due to the political crisis. Negotiations intensified in connection with the possibility of the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, reports TASS with reference to the Wall Street Journal.

Other parliamentarians confirmed that the committee had asked the Iraqi military to discuss “acquiring air defense equipment” with Moscow.

Abdel Halek al-Aazaui, a member of the parliamentary committee on security and defense, said that the Cabinet of Ministers is authorized to “acquire air defense equipment from any country” – “from Russia or from anyone else.”

Sources in the Wall Street Journal report that Moscow was offering S-400 to Baghdad. WSJ does not exclude that in the case of the acquisition of Russian air defense systems, Iraq is facing US sanctions.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defense, the Pentagon, the White House and the State Department have not yet commented.

Recently, the head of the defense and security committee of the Iraqi parliament, Muhammad Rida, said that Baghdad has resumed negotiations with Moscow on the acquisition of S-300 anti-aircraft systems and expects opposition from Washington on this issue.
