This was reported in the press service of the Western Military District (ZVO). According to the military historian Yuri Knutov, the arrival of the “Shell” is due to the need to cover the S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to build a reliable layered air defense system.

“As part of the state defense order, in January 2020, the unit’s troops are planning to receive another batch of special equipment – the Pantsir-S self-propelled anti-aircraft missile and cannon system,” the ZVO press service said.

Earlier, the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Sergey Shoigu announced that in 2020 the Russian troops will receive four regiment sets of modern anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) S-400 Triumph. In addition, the head of the defense department also mentioned the entry into the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation of six divisional sets of the Pantsir complex.

“To deliver to the Aerospace Forces and the Navy 106 new and upgraded aircraft, four regiment sets of the S-400 Triumph anti-aircraft missile system, and six divisional sets of the Pantsir complex,” said Sergei Shoigu during a meeting of the Defense Ministry’s final collegium RF

It is also emphasized that the military personnel of the Leningrad Army have already received appropriate training on working on new weapons systems.

The correspondent of the information and analytical publication Slovo i Delo learned from a military historian, director of the museum of air defense forces in the village of Zarya, Balashikha district, Yuri Knutov, whether the transfer of the Pantsir-S complexes to the air defense forces is a consistent strategy of the Russian Ministry of Defense to build an effective layered air defense system , which will protect the airspace in the north-west of the country.

“Of course, since the S-400 is a long-range complex, which although it is quite universal thanks to the use of different missiles, it, like the S-300 and older systems developed back in Soviet times, has a so-called dead zone. Directly above the station there is such a funnel where the complex cannot hit targets. In this regard, as a rule, one SAM protects another. In Soviet times, there was such a system, and now, to solve this problem, the Pantsir complexes are used that cover this dead zone. It is the “Armor” that usually covers the S-400 divisions. Thus, a continuous zone of fire is created,” the expert explained.

The journalist also asked the interlocutor what key tasks the new Pantsir-S air defense missile systems will carry out, the receipt of which is expected in the 6th Leningrad Red Banner Army of the Air Force and Air Defense.

“Now we are also developing a new“ Shell ”, which will have an increased range of destruction and more effective missiles, allowing to shoot down almost all types of targets. Currently, the troops are receiving the version now existing, which is a completely reliable means. We are creating a continuous air defense umbrella, which, of course, will be more effective with the advent of the S-500. Gradually, we move on to the formation of a centric air defense system, when all the complexes are linked into a single network and work as a single system, the S-500 will be the head one in the future. We are following this path, and the “Shell” is the most important element in this system,” Knutov concluded.

Recall that the anti-aircraft missile and cannon system “Shell-C1”, which had the designation “Tunguska-3” at the development stage, is equipped with automatic guns and guided anti-aircraft missiles. The complex is universal, and can be placed on a tracked and wheeled chassis, as well as on a trailer or installed permanently. Search for targets and guidance is carried out using the radar of early detection and target designation of the type of phased array and radar tracking.
