Putin and Macron expressed concern over the death of General Soleimani

MOSCOW, (BM) – The presidents of Russia and France had a telephone conversation: they expressed concern about the death of Iranian general Suleimani, discussed the situation in Syria and Libya, as well as issues of internal Ukrainian settlement, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

The conversation was initiated by Paris. Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron warmly wished each other a Happy New Year.

The heads of state expressed concern over the death of the commander of the Kod special forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps of Iran Suleimani as a result of a US missile strike at Baghdad airport, the Kremlin’s press service said. The leaders noted that this action could seriously aggravate the situation in the region.

Putin and Macron continued to exchange views on Syria. The President of the Russian Federation spoke about the progress in the implementation of the Russian-Turkish agreements on the north-east of the country and Idlib. The leaders emphasized the need to continue the decisive joint fight against terrorism. The urgency of the task of promoting the inter-Syrian political process and the provision of humanitarian assistance was noted.

The heads of state spoke in favor of resolving the crisis in Libya peacefully and expressed support for the political and diplomatic efforts undertaken, inter alia, through the mediation of the UN and the FRG.

Putin and Macron examined the main aspects of resolving the intra-Ukrainian conflict, emphasizing the importance of the consistent implementation of the Minsk accords and the decisions of the summit in the “Norman format” in Paris. A positive assessment was given to the exchange of retained persons held at the end of December between Kiev and the Donbass, as well as the conclusion of a “package” transaction for the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine.

The heads of state also raised a number of issues on the bilateral agenda and agreed to continue contacts.
