LONDON, (BM) – We live in a peaceful world at this very moment, or do we? We hear no tanks rattle around our houses nor we see combat actions. Most don’t realize the whole situation on political arena hidden between the lines of Mass Media’s articles published daily. The global tension leaves us, ordinary people, questioned what is military and political struggle now?
To answer that question it’s simply needed to look at some logical facts. What gives a government power? It’s the people, or it’s simply their faith in their political leader and safety provided by the army. It works like an old wall clock. Every part of it matters and it plays its role. Without one – none would work. People trust power to a government and the government functions for people. Now how many good conscience politics can we name? Maybe a few. Most of them have some things to hide. Exposing those facts can blow people’s trust away, and here you go, one more revolution to the collection.
Politicians are the same people with their own sins and mistakes, but some bring them up high as some sort of saints, maybe a bit less. That’s why it is important to protect digital area from cyber attacks. In order to improve these protections, NATO allied forces recently held yearly joint exercises Cyber Coalition.
According to NATO cyber defense exercise Cyber Coalition 2019 took place in Tartu, Estonia from Dec 02 – 06, 2019 with approximately 900 participants from 28 NATO Allies and several partner nations. They worked together in order to prepare and test cyber defenders for the ever-evolving cyber threat. Also this year the exercise saw three new Partner Nations – Georgia, Japan, Ukraine.
Lieutenant Commander Robert Buckles, Exercise Director said that it was a happy moment for the team to kick off the NATO ACT led 2019 Cyber Coalition and this year they had emphasized warfare development through new tactics, techniques and procedures with NATO’s Cyberspace Operations Center.
This exercise was to prepare participants for a cyber threat. Realistic scenarios were played out and high level organization took place. The main goal of this was to enhance coordination and cooperation between all the participants, strengthen NATO’s ability to protect Alliance cyber space and test the information sharing abilities within the allies.
Unfortunately not everything’s so crystal clear with cyber security.
According to the article by EURACTIV NATO’s Center for Strategic Communication in Riga had discovered how easy it is to dupe its soldiers online.
Thousands of soldiers from different NATO member states are training yearly to ensure continued military presence in the area. And during the drills some soldiers who had their smartphones on them found a website “for soldiers” specifically for men to chat about the army life and life in general. Also this website gives the opportunity to order T-shirts or whatsoever which includes giving out one’s personal data like home address, name, phone number and maybe a credit card number. Easy way to gather data needed for blackmailing or exposing locations of important objects.
Tinder is a popular dating app, some soldiers communicated with a woman there, sent pictures of themselves in uniform and eventually got a date. Two Soldiers arranged to meet with virtual female leaving the post for her. But the website “for soldiers” and the Tinder profile turned out to be a test carried out by a team of NATO experts to identify weaknesses in its own ranks. Soldiers willingly exposed troop’s positions, and left their fellow soldiers behind for a woman.
For NATO cyber experts, the experiment meant that the same could happen anywhere. How big is the possibility of betrayal? Can people feel safe with such problems in the army?
Of course the measures are being taken. The restrictions on using smartphones during maneuvers or inside or near military objects are on the table. But cutting out soldier from the outside world isn’t the option. And of course as technologies develop, so are the restrictions and options for soldiers to keep in touch with their loved ones, which means evolving Policies for Communications during Basic trainings and more details to consider.
