WASHINGTON, (BM) – On Wednesday, members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate voted to adopt a package of sanctions against Turkey over Ankara’s operation in northeastern Syria and the purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, according senior committee democrat Robert Menendez statement.
The document will now be submitted to the Senate of the whole. There they can make adjustments. In late October, a similar bill was already approved by the House of Representatives of the US Congress, reports TASS.
According to the initiative, President Donald Trump will be required to impose restrictions on those involved in the military operation in Syria, including against Turkish Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar. Also, under the CAATSA law (On Countering America’s Adversaries through Sanctions,) the White House should introduce restrictions in connection with the purchase of Ankara S-400.
The sanctions, if approved, should affect the large Turkish state bank Halkbank and any other financial institutions that “deliberately facilitated significant transactions involving the Turkish armed forces or the defense industry of Turkey involved in the invasion.”
Washington will also be prohibited from “providing the Turkish government with defense goods, services and technologies” if they can be used in Syria.
Sanctions for the S-400 will be taken in accordance with the CAATSA law, which involves the introduction by the US government of restrictions on states that conclude major contracts with Russia for the purchase of military equipment.
Meanwhile, Ankara said it was ready to consider closing the Incirlik airbase for US troops if Washington imposed sanctions on Turkey’s acquisition of the S-400.
Washington offered Ankara to abandon the S-400 for $ 100 billion, but Turkey did not agree to this.
