Russian Black Sea Fleet frigate fires Kalibr cruise missile system in drills
The Black Sea Fleet frigate Admiral Essen fired the Kalibr cruise missile system during drills in the Black Sea, the Fleet’s press office reported on Wednesday.
“In accordance with the combat training plan, the Black Sea Fleet frigate Admiral Essen fired the Kalibr missile system against a coastal target from a combat training naval range in the Black Sea. The crew of the frigate Admiral Essen delivered a missile strike against the coastal target while accomplishing the assigned mission,” the press office said in a statement.
The missile successfully hit the target on the coastal training range after flying over 140 nautical miles (over 250 km) along a complex flight path. Unmanned aerial vehicles providing visual observation made it possible to register that the missile accurately hit the target, the statement says.
The Black Sea area where the frigate conducted its missile launch was closed for shipping for the purpose of security. A total of ten warships and support vessels, and also aircraft and helicopters of the Black Sea Fleet’s naval aviation and air defense force helped close the area, the press office said.
The missile firing in the Black Sea is the second live-fire exercise with the Kalibr precision missile system performed by the crews of the Black Sea Fleet’s new frigates in accordance with planned combat training.
Erdogan: Turkey ready to send troops to Libya
Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has announced that he is prepared to deploy Turkish soldiers to Libya, should the UN-recognised government make the request.
During a televised interview on Monday, Erdogan disclosed “if Libya were to invite Turkey, of course Turkey would have the right to go to Libya as per the accord,” referring to last month’s deal signed with Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), led by Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj. “We are prepared to give all manner of support to Libya,” Erdogan added.
This comes against developments that Libyan general, Khalifa Haftar, and his Libyan National Army (LNA) are edging closer to the capital, Tripoli, with support from Russian forces. “Haftar is not a national representative of Libya there, Sarraj is,” President Erdoğan asserted.
The Libya Observer noted that on the topic of Russian support to Haftar, Erdogan would talk to Russian president, Vladimir Putin, regarding the latest developments in Libya this week, so as to avoid another Syria scenario, while also adding that supporting Haftar is illegal as he is leading “illegitimate entities”.
On 27 November, Turkey and the GNA signed a bilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU). Following this bilateral agreement, the Greek government announced its expulsion of the Libyan ambassador to the country, describing the Turkey-Libya accord as a “blatant violation of international law.”
Israel threatens to take military action against Iran
Israeli foreign minister, Yisrael Katz, threatened on Tuesday to take military action against Iran, in order to undermine its efforts in obtaining nuclear weapons, Israeli media reported.
According to Haaretz, Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper posed the question to Katz, “is bombing Iran an option that Israel is considering?”
Katz’s response to this was “yes, it is an option. We will not allow Iran to produce or obtain nuclear weapons. If it were the last possible way to stop this, we would act militarily.”
Katz asserted that Iran is not familiar with the reality of Israel, stating that “the Iranians have no idea who they’re dealing with. If they realized that 1,000 Tomahawk missiles could be fired at them, they would behave differently. We know that there is no real threat to the regime itself.”
Meanwhile, he also warned Iran that “Israel is not the helpless protesters being slaughtered by the ayatollah regime in Iran and Iraq. We will be able to respond forcefully to any threat or attack.”
Meanwhile, Haaretz reported the Israeli minister criticising European countries for not supporting US president, Donald Trump, who withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.
