HELSINKI, (BM) – Finland is watching for increased international activity in the Arctic, including Russian exercises in the region, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, quoting Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
This was announced on Monday by Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen, speaking at the Washington Center for Strategic and International Studies.
“Activity in the Arctic has increased lately. We are closely monitoring everything that is happening in this region, including the recent fairly large military maneuvers of Russia in the Arctic,” said Kaikkonen.
He also pointed out that it was important to “continue cooperation between Europeans and the United States.” The Finnish Defense Minister said that the country’s armed forces “are easy to cooperate and work in these [arctic] conditions, they are well aware of this region.”
Kaikkonen added that Finland intends to increase its defense budget by 30% during the 2020s, as a result of which defense spending will exceed 2% of GDP.
