IDF hits Hamas targets in Gaza airstrikes in response to rocket fire
The Israel Defense Forces launched airstrikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip late Tuesday night and early Wednesday in response to a rocket attack from the coastal enclave earlier in the evening, the army said.
Fighter jets hit a number of targets in southern Gaza, including one site “for the production of arms,” the IDF said.
“The strikes were carried out in response to the rockets that were fired from the Strip toward Israel. The Hamas terror group is responsible for all violence emanating from the Strip,” the army said.
Before dawn Wednesday, the IDF said it carried out a second wave of strikes, targeting an underground facility in northern Gaza.
Shortly after the air raids reportedly began, sirens sounded in the city of Ashkelon, sending tens of thousands of residents rushing to bomb shelters.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The IDF said it was investigating what triggered the alarms. The Ashkelon municipality said the sirens appeared to have been set off by anti-aircraft fire from the Gaza Strip.
Moments before the strikes began, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned terror groups in Gaza they were making a “serious mistake” by firing the two rockets at Israel on Tuesday night.
Iranian media announced plans to build a “giant destroyer”
By order of the Iranian navy, it is planned to build a “giant destroyer” that can operate in international waters for a long time. This was reported by the local FNA media, citing a statement by the country’s Navy commander Rear Admiral Hossein Hunzadi.
According to the designated military, the efforts of his department developed the Negin project, which envisaged the construction of a new destroyer. As he said, the ship will have a displacement from 5 thousand to 7 thousand tons and will be able to carry out combat missions in remote areas for quite some time.
As explained in the FNA, “the heaviest destroyers [so in the text – IN] used by the Iranian naval forces have a displacement of almost 1300 tons.” However, according to the publication, major successes were achieved in shipbuilding, allowing to fulfill the task.
Six killed in three separate Baghdad explosions
At least six people were killed and 15 wounded in Baghdad in three separate explosions on Tuesday, Iraqi security and medical sources said, reports Reuters.
Three people were killed and five wounded in the capital’s northern Shaab district when a motorcycle exploded, the sources said. A second motorcycle exploded in the southwestern Bayaa district, killing two and wounding six.
An improvised explosive device went off in the eastern Baladiyat district, killing one person and wounding four.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Daesh militants are known to make similar attacks in Baghdad and other provinces.
Iraq declared victory over the militants in late 2017 after pushing them out of all territory they held in the country. They have since reverted to hit-and-run insurgency tactics aimed at destabilising the government.
