Russia demonstrates Avangard hypersonic missile system to US
The Russian military demonstrated the latest Avangard missile system with the hypersonic boost-glide vehicle to the United States, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday.
“Under the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms, a US inspection group was shown the Avangard missile system with the hypersonic boost-glide vehicle on the territory of Russia on November 24-26, 2019,” the ministry said in a statement.
Russia demonstrated its latest weapon for the purpose of keeping the New START Treaty viable and effective, the statement says.
The Avangard is a strategic intercontinental ballistic missile system equipped with a hypersonic boost-glide vehicle. According to open sources, the breakthrough weapon was developed by the Research and Production Association of Machine-Building (the town of Reutov, the Moscow Region) and was tested from 2004. The boost-glide vehicle is capable of flying at over 20 times the speed of sound in the dense layers of the atmosphere, maneuvering by its flight path and its altitude and breaching any anti-missile defense.
Grenade attacks kill two in Kashmir, several wounded
Suspected militants threw grenades in Indian Kashmir on Tuesday killing two people and wounding eight, police said, the latest outbreak of violence in the disputed Himalayan region months after New Delhi revoked its autonomy and statehood.
Two people – including a government official and a member of a village council – were killed and four wounded in one of the blasts in southern Kashmir’s Anantnag district where they were holding a meeting to address public grievances.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government on Oct. 31 turned the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two federally-controlled territories, arguing that special provisions for the region had hindered its development and fuelled separatism.
But the move has been opposed in areas of Jammu and Kashmir, which both India and Pakistan claim in full but rule in parts.
