Bad News for Russia: Turkey Will Help US Study S-400`s Impact on F-35 Fighters Jets

PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced at a meeting with US President Donald Trump that Turkey has no intention of giving up Russia’s S-400 air defense systems.

We remind you that Turkey purchased these systems and the first deliveries began in the middle of this year, continuing until the end of the next.

At the meeting between the two presidents, Erdogan mentioned that Turkey’s opportunity to buy the American analogue, the Patriot, was not eliminated.

The US and NATO member states have serious concerns about Russia’s S-400 anti-aircraft defense system. One of the main reasons is that Russian technology is incompatible for use with NATO-calibrated military equipment.

The US, however, fears otherwise – whether the Russian S-400 system will be able to unravel the secrets of American stealth technology that will make their F-22 and F-35 fighter jets vulnerable.

That is why the statement of the Special Advisor to President Erdogan Ibrahim Kalin is extremely interesting: “Washington and Ankara have begun work to establish a joint mechanism to identify the impact of the S-400 on the [Fifth Generation] F-35 fighter.”

However, Kalin did not specify exactly what was included in this concept and what the specialists from both countries would do.

All this can put to the test the good relations between Russia and Turkey in recent years.

Russia’s S-400 has been named “one of the best air defense systems ever made” by America`s The Economist magazine, and several international organizations call it “one of the most advanced systems the world currently has.”

What is impressive about its design is the radar system, which has the capability to “capture and locate” any type of aircraft and missile wings, including stealth technology aircraft.

So far, there has been no official statement from the Russian authorities regarding Ibrahim Kalin’s statement.

However, if such a joint mechanism is established between the US and Turkey to assess the impact of the S-400 on the F-35, it could degrade the good political tone between Russia and Turkey.

And while earlier this year the US had problems with Turkey’s ordering of Russian systems, now the Russians will have reason to oppose such Turkish action because it may affect the future development of the Russian defense industry in the field of artillery air defense.

According to unofficial data, the future S-500 air defense system will have the same radar for locating targets, but with some improvements. If the US unravels the secrets of the S-400, it is unclear whether these radar enhancements to the S-500 will be sufficient to guarantee the desired defense.

Just days ago, we wrote an article saying that the US should buy at least one Russian air defense system, the S-400, to unravel its secrets and build better protection for their F-22s and F-35s.

This action may no longer be necessary if Washington and Ankara decide to work together to evaluate the impact of the C-400 on US F-35s.

What S-400 missile defense system is?

The S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) is an advanced long-range anti-aircraft missile system that went into service in 2007. It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, including medium-range ones, and can also be used against ground objectives. The S-400 complex can engage targets at 400 km and at an altitude of up to 30 km.

Why the S-400 and the F-35 Can’t Get Along?

According to City of London University professor David Stupples, the S-400’s radar system can see the F-35 in all flight profiles of the aircraft, which will be a reason to identify the fighter’s weaknesses using stealth technology.

According to Stupples, this is just one reason. The other is that, after Turkey has already bought the Russian S-400s, it opens the door to Russia for the next five years – the period of technical support. This will allow Russia to deploy intelligence agents.
