MOSCOW, (BM) – The recent exercises in Algeria, accompanied by the launch of Club-S cruise missiles, attracted the attention of the European press, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
In Europe, they even saw in the shooting a security threat to their countries, fearing the emergence of an advanced Russian in the Mediterranean Sea weapons.
Algeria’s quantum leap
During the maneuvers of the submarines that became part of the fleet in January of this year, on September 29, they launched the export version of the Caliber, while underwater. Moreover, successfully hit targets were both on the water and on the ground.
“Algerian Navy makes a quantum leap in the development of its deterrent potential” writes journalist of the Spanish edition of ABC Esteban Villarejo, indicating that this was achieved thanks to the adoption of Russian submarines of the 636 class.
According to him, even France does not possess submarines of this type equipped with tactical missiles: the country’s Navy only plans to equip the Barracuda submarine with the Scalp, now only Freem class frigates are their carrier. In Spain, the government has not yet approved the purchase of C-80 submarines.
At present, the Navy of eight countries with submarines in their fleets is located in the Mediterranean Sea: Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt and Algeria.
“Algeria’s qualitative leap is obvious because, along with Mediterranean Israel, only the USA, Russia, China, North Korea and the UK have the ability to launch missiles from a submarine and destroy [from its side] ground targets” indicates Villarejo.
The most advanced weapon
According to the journalist, Algeria, without frigates and aircraft carriers, possesses, thanks to the Varshavyanki, the most advanced deterrence weapon.
Neighboring Morocco, to which there have historically been territorial claims, does not have submarines in its fleet, although it has shown a desire to acquire them.
Algeria currently has six submarines: four 636 classes delivered from Russian shipyards in St. Petersburg in the 2010 and 2019 years, and two 877ECM submarines belonging to the oldest Kilo modification. They were delivered in 1987 and 1988 and subsequently went through modernization (in 1993 and 1996). In addition, the Algerian fleet plans to acquire two more submarines of the 636 class, Villarejo notes.
“Spain is losing dominance in the southern waters of the Iberian Peninsula due to the growth of some neighboring fleets. This is especially true for the rearmament of submarine forces in Algeria. Algeria today has a higher underwater potential, it can be said, even much higher than the Spanish level” writes in this regard, the publication ECD, stating that the EU should be wary of the Navy of Algeria and especially the Algerian Warsaw.
