SOFIA, (BGM) – As we wrote earlier, the US Congress gave its approval for making a US-Bulgarian deal for acquisition of a new combat aircraft F-16 by the Bulgarian Air Force.
The American manufacturer of the F-16 fighter aircraft also sent its comment on the deal, explaining what the approval by the Congress and the deal price actually mean.
“The Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process is a function of the US government policy, but it is important to specify that the cost estimates included in the Congress notification give the maximum total price. This provides an opportunity for further expansion of the program without requiring re-approval by the US Congress. However, this price is not indicative of the final value of the contract and should not be considered in this way. The Congress’s approval is an important step in the process of foreign military sales. It is a necessary condition before the US government can send its final offer to the government of Bulgaria,“ said John Neilson, Director of Communications for Europe and Israel at Lockheed Martin.
BulgarianMilitary.com recalls that in the middle of last month the negotiations with the US government were not satisfactory with regard to the offered price to Bulgaria. Then the Bulgarian Minister of Defence Krasimir Karakachanov said that “it is not proper to name specific parameters. If nothing happens here, we can ask the National Assembly permission to start talks with the other countries – Sweden or Italy. There is no peremptory situation to accept any price. We may deviate from the price but within acceptable limits,“.
