SOFIA, Bulgaria (BulgarianMilitary.com) – A Bulgarian delegation is leaving on May 7, 2019, for Washington to negotiate the acquisition of a new type of combat aircraft for the Bulgarian army, the Minister of Defence Krasimir Karakachanov announced, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
The delegation will be led by the Deputy Minister of Defence Atanas Zapryanov, and members will be the Bulgarian Air Force Commander Major General Tsanko Stoykov and experts from the Air Force, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy.
“The instructions are very clear – to adhere to the price fixed by the parliament, without reducing the capabilities of the aircrafts that we need to buy”, said Minister Karakachanov.
He also explained that the Bulgarian delegation would have to raise the issue of the payment for the new fighter jets and insist that they should not be paid all at once.
“We want several equal instalments so we won’t have troubles suddenly. You saw that the prime minister declared that we had the money that were set aside, but it would be better to spend it in several instalments, not at one-off payment, because it would make difficult for us to implement other projects or to maintain the existing equipment”, the Minister argues.
Krasimir Karakachanov also touched on the subject of the industrial cooperation and announced that our country would propose the establishment of a pilot training center in Dolna Mitropoliya connected with the forthcoming restoration of the aviation school there.
“Things are moving in the right direction. I wish the pace to be accelerated, but as it is said – as means allow us. Compared to previous years, something significant is still being done,” he said.
Earlier this year, the Parliament mandated the Council of Ministers to prepare an international treaty and to negotiate with the US government for the purchase of a new type of F-16V Block 70 combat aircraft that will be manufactured by the American company Lockheed Martin Corporation.
