The US Army Selected the GE’s T901 Engine for the EMD phase of the ITE Program

CINCINNATI, Ohio, the United States (BulgarianMilitary.com) – GE Aviation revealed on Friday (1st February 2019) that the Army of the United States has selected the T901-GE-900 engine for the EMD (Engineering and Manufacturing Development) phase of the Improved Turbine Engine Program (ITEP), learned BulgarianMilitary.com

With that move the U.S. Army aims to re-engine its Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawks and Boeing AH-64 Apaches under the ITEP. The ITEP was initiated by the U.S. Army to seek a new turboshaft engine in order to provide 50% more power, 25% better specific fuel consumption while reducing life cycle costs due to added capabilities and associated weight of the Apache and Black Hawk helicopters, which are also already required to perform at higher and hotter conditions than they were designed for.

The president and CEO of the military business of GE Aviation, Tony Mathis, said, “We are honoured to be chosen by the Army to continue powering their Black Hawks and Apaches for decades to come. We’ve invested in the resources and infrastructure to execute immediately, and our team is ready to get to work on delivering the improved capabilities of the T901 to the Warfighter.”

Black Hawks and Apaches have been powered with the T700 engine of GE for the past 4 decades, racking up more than 100 million flight hours of combat-proven experience. During that period the power was, of course, doubled and the cost to the government was reduced by 50% through continuous upgrades and technology advancements.

The T901 engine now is ready to continue delivering combat readiness over the next four decades. The T901 features single-spool core design, which is the key factor, thanks to which low cost, growth, reliability, maintainability and reduced life-cycle costs have been achieved.
