Russia’s Rostec Uses Innovative Coating to Reduce the Radar Signature of the Su-57 and the Tu-160

MOSCOW, the Russian Federation (BulgarianMilitary.com)  – Today, the Russia’s state corporation Rostec reported that to make the cockpit conopy of the 5th-generation multirole fighter jet Sukhoi Su-57 and the strategic missile-carrying bomber Tupolev Tu-160, the company applied a new composite material that featured advanced radar wave absorbing properties, learned BulgarianMilitary.com

The specialists of the ORPE Technologiya located in Obninsk, which is a leading enterprise of RT-Chemcomposite Group within Rostec, have developed the innovative stealth coating in a way it to double the radar wave absorption and to reduce the aircraft cockpit’s radar signature by 30%. Moreover, it protects the pilot from the impact of thermal, ultraviolet, and other negative factors, during the flight.

The Russian news agency TASS reports the statement of the company: “The coating weakens the thermal component of solar radiation by more than three times while the integral transmittance index in the visible range makes up no less than 65% and the impact of the ultraviolet component drops by more than 4-6 times.

According to an earlier statement made by Sergei Abramov, the Industrial Director of the Rostec’s cluster of Conventional Weapons, Ammunition and Special Chemistry, this new composite material has no weak points, because, as Abramov said, it halves the weight of the cockpit’s glass canopy and increases, from 40% to 80%, the impact resistance and radar wave absorption.

From the Russian hi-tech corporation also said that at the moment, this type of coating is applied not only to the canopy of the Su-57 and Tu-160 aircraft, but also to the MiG-29Ks and the Su-30s, Su-34s and Su-35s. Rostec emphasized the fact that it was made of 70-90 nm thick metal oxide layers.

Unlike its predecessors, the 5th-generation multirole fighter Su-57, features functions of a fighter jet as well as of an attack aircraft and its aerodynamic configuration along with the use of innovation technologies and composite materials, ensure the low level of radar and infrared signature. The stealth fighter is capable to hit all types of air targets as well as enemy ground and naval targets at long and short ranges.

The production of the upgraded biggest plane with a variable-sweep wing Tu-160 was restarted in 2015 at the Kazan Aircraft Enterprise. Then in November 2017, the new combat aircraft was delivered to the flight testing station after its final assembly. Due to the upgrade, Tu-160’s efficiency is expected to be increased by 60%. At the end of the last month, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Alexei Krivoruchko, announced that the the production of the upgraded Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bomber had started by Kazan Aviation Factory n.a. S.P.Gorbunov, branch of PJSC Tupolev, in the Volga area.
