SOFIA, Bulgaria, (BulgarianMilitary.com) – On 30 October, Bulgaria’s Deputy Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Dimitar Iliev attended the day for high-ranking quests, part o f the biggest NATO-led military exercise Trident Juncture 18, which is held in Norway, reports the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence. In Trondheim, he congratulated the Bulgarian participants for their results achieved in the course of the exercise, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
There, as an official representative of the Bulgarian MoD, Lieutenant General Dimitar Iliev expressed the department’s gratitude to the Deputy Commander of the Allied Joint Force Command in Naples, Lieutenant General Christian Juneau, for the assistance provided to our military personnel joined to the Canadian multinational brigade. Along with him, the Bulgarian participants were also congratulated by the military representative of the Chief of Defence at the Military Committees of NATO and EU, Vice Admiral Georgi Fidanov, who also attended the demonstrations in Norway, on Tuesday.
During the VIP day, at the first stage of Trident Juncture 18, which was held in an area covering territories of Norway, Sweden and Finland, the servicemen from more than 30 states demonstrated defence capabilities, and the states themselves – armaments and equipment. In turn, Bulgaria showed in Norway, a radiation and chemical reconnaissance vehicle as well as equipment for unexploded munitions disarming.
In Trondheim, the official guests were welcomed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who emphasized the important role of all participating states, in the context of the Alliance unity and its capacity to protect each of its members. He stressed on the defence nature of the live field exercise, saying that it was not directed against any country. In his opening speech Jens Stoltenberg stated: “We exercise to strengthen our ability to operate together, to test and certify the NATO Response Force, and to send a clear message. NATO’s mission is to preserve the peace. Not to provoke a conflict, but to prevent a conflict. To do so, we provide credible deterrence. With the strength and the speed of our forces, and our ability to operate together.”
Admiral James Foggo, who serves as the Commander of Allied Joint Force Command, Naples, Italy and is an officer, conducting the Trident Juncture 18, highly evaluated the demonstrated joint actions and cooperation, achieved so far in the exercise, defining them as evidence of the joint defence capabilities. Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General André Lanata was also pleased with the results, despite the difficulties during the preparatory stage.

In the exercise our country is presented by the Joint Forces Command group for movement control, a platoon for radiation and chemical reconnaissance, assigned to the 38th NBC Defence Battalion – Musachevo, a platoon for disposal of unexploded munitions from the 55th Engineer Regiment – Belene, and a civil-military cooperation group from the 78th Battalion – Sofia, as well as two officers, from the Land Forces and the Joint Forces Command.
