The Russian Minister of Defence Chaired the CIS Session in Uzbekistan

MOSCOW, the Russian Federation, ( – Last week, on 12 October, the capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, hosted a regular session of the Council of Ministers of Defence of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries, chaired by the Russia’s Defence Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu. He arrived in Tashkent to participate in the meeting along with delegations of the military departments from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, learned

During the summit, which was planned to summarize and coordinate the joint activity in the fields of defence and security between the CIS countries, the attendees discussed the issues of this multilateral cooperation, and took decisions on providing aircraft flight operations, information system, as well as on developing the joint system for monitoring and evaluating radiation, chemical and biological situation of the armed forces of the CIS member states. The Russian Defence Minister, Sergei Shoigu, specified the results and the decisions of the session, by pointing out that defined fields for development of joint military systems are air defence, radar identification, communication, control and assessment of adiation, chemical and biological situation. He also stated that the CIS members have signed agreements in the following areas: military aviation, topographic, meteorological and information support of the armed forces.

Shoigu added that at the Tashkent CIS meeting the Defence ministers shared their views on the Central Asia situation, discussed the priorities in countering international terrorism and have developed steps to fight against it.

The Russian Defence Minister concluded: “The session confirmed that our cooperation has stable prospects for development. We plan over 50 various joint activities. Results show that tasks defined by out presidents in Concept of military cooperation are gradually implemented.”

One of the agreements, secured at the CIS meeting, was this between the Defence Ministers of Russia and Uzbekistan, Sergei Shoigu and Major General Abdusalom Azizov for space management cooperation between the both countries. This agreement will allow problems related to airlift and carry out non-stop flights by military transport planes to be solved. Furthermore, the both Defence Ministers signed and a plan on cooperation between defence ministries of Russia and Uzbekistan for 2019.

On the evening of the CIS session Russian Defence Minister Army of the General Sergei Shoigu, during a meeting with his Uzbekistan counterpart, said that Russia sees Uzbekistan as a strategic partner in Central Asia and emphasized the cooperation between the two countries in many areas including the security sphere. He added that this year, more than 340 Uzbekistan servicemen had started training at military educational institutions in Russia.
