A week ago, on 11 September 2018, it was announced that The Protective Group (TPG), a Point Blank Enterprises company, has been awarded by the subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, a contract for providing a high performance, light-weight crew protection kit for the new CH-53K Unites States Marine Corps King Stallion heavy-lift helicopter, learned BulgarianMilitary.com
Mark Edwards, the Executive Vice President of Business Development, Point Blank Enterprises, commented, “Our experience in rapid development and fielding of reliable light weight aircraft survivability solutions was key to Sikorsky’s decision to select us as their CH-53K program partner. We are incredibly proud that Sikorsky selected us to provide a survivability package for such an important and long term program.”
That crew protection kit involves individual ballistic panels fixed beneath the cabin and ramp floor and within the cabin side frames.
The multi-engine (three 5,590 kW engines) CH-53K helicopter of Sikorsky Aircraft is dual-piloted. Its first flight was carried out on 27 October 2015 and the first CH-53K was delivered to Marine Corps in May 2018. That large cargo helicopter has been designed to be a safe, survivable, and a reliable weapon systems platform. Through it the U.S. Marine Corps will acquire improved heavy lift capability, advanced interoperability, as well as reduced operating costs.
The Protective Group has a 50-year history of developing battle tested lightweight composite armour system solutions, which have been deployed by the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Special Forces, as well as International Forces all over the world. TPG develops survivability solutions for personnel, ground vehicles, shipboard systems, as well as for aviation platforms.
TPG is originally a division of AVCO now Textron. TPG was recently acquired by Point Blank Enterprises, which is the largest body armour manufacturer in the world.
