Japan may receive up to nine early-warning aircraft at the amount of an estimated $3.1 billion as the possible sale is approved by the United States State Department (USSD). That was revealed by the USSD yesterday, on 10 September 2018, learned BulgarianMilitary.com

“It is vital to US national interests to assist Japan in developing and maintaining a strong and effective self-defence capability,” commented from the U.S. State Department

The maker of the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft is Northrop Grumman. These planes feature powerful radars, which may detect other aircraft and ships at long range.

The deal, if successfully concluded, will include the associated technology and spare engines as well.

Now the United States Congress has 30 days to raise objections to the sale. It is considered that this will not happen, because Japan is a close ally of the United States.

Some of the many new features of the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft include completely new radar featuring both mechanical and electronic scanning capabilities, fully integrated “all glass” tactical cockpit, advanced Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system, new mission computer and tactical workstations, electronic support measures enhancements, as well as a modernized communications and data link suite. These and other new developments incorporated into the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye provide multi-mission flexibility ranging from command and control through missile defence to border security, as well as true 360-degree radar coverage that ensures uncompromised all-weather tracking and situational awareness. The E-2D aircraft gives the warfighter expanded battlespace awareness, especially in the area of information operations delivering battle management, theatre air and missile defence, and multiple sensor fusion capabilities in an airborne system. Its successful first flight was conducted on 3 August 2007.
