The U.S. Marines received in advance the delivery of the the first AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task-Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) of Northrop Grumman Corporation. This is the seventh G/ATOR system provision that follows the delivery of another six systems in the phase of low rate initial production (LRIP), learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
In February, this year, employing two of the six systems the Marine Corps managed to achieve G/ATOR Initial Operational Capability (IOC) of the air surveillance mission. The other four will establish IOC for the counter-battery mission later this year.
The AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR is designed to meet the needs of U.S. Marine Corps, moreover it is quickly deployable worldwide. It is advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) multi-mission radar that ensures detailed real time, 360 degree situational awareness against a wide range of threats such as fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, unmanned autonomous systems (UAS), and rockets, artillery and mortar. The recent cyber and digital beam forming technology enables the radar to carry out multi-mission tasks. Compared to the existing USMC radar systems, it operates at significantly lower operation and maintenance costs.
The system’s operational capabilities are improved in means of high power and advance gallium nitride (GaN) antenna technology that is expected to be incorporated in all subsequent G/ATOR LRIP and full rate production systems. In addition to the enhanced sensitivity and the increase reliability of the system, it also provides cost savings.
In a statement of Roshan Roeder, vice president, land & avionics C4ISR division, Northrop Grumman about the delivery, she says that the Marine Corps are the first who receive ground based multi mission AESA radar that incorporates this advanced GaN technology.
She added “The incorporation of this advanced technology in production radars is unique to the Marine Corps and enables G/ATOR to provide additional mission capability to the warfighter at an affordable cost.”
Northrop Grumman along with the Marine Corps proceed in the detailed preparations for the successful implementation of the full rate production program, which is planned to start in the early 2019.
