The Bulgarian Deputy Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov is among the three new chairmen selected for the European Defence Agency (EDA) Steering Boards. He has been appointed as a chairman in the National Armaments Directors composition, learned BulgarianMilitary.com
This was announced in an official letter of the Head of the EDA Federica Mogherini. The appointment of Atanas Zapryanov is for a period of three years, starting from 1st December 2018, and is in addition to his current duties as a Deputy Defence Minister of Bulgaria. He will chair the Board at two meetings annually. The first meeting chaired by him will be held in late February 2019.
The Bulgarian Defence Minister will take over the chairmanship at a moment when the Agency is fulfilling important engagements related, in particular, to the building of EU military capabilities.
The EU Member States, who supported the nomination of the Deputy Defence Minister Zapryanov, were impressed by his professional experience and especially by his active participation in the trialogue between the institutions in Brussels for the adoption of a Regulation for the EU Defence Industrial Development Programme during the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. Atanas Zapryanov also has had good cooperation with EDA for many years on various matters from the agenda of the Agency.
EDA was established on 12 July 2004 and is based in Brussels, Belgium. It is an intergovernmental agency of the Council of the European Union and presently connects about 4,000 national based-experts in cooperative defence projects. As of the moment all EU Member States except Denmark participate in EDA (27 countries in total). The European Council approves all Administrative Arrangements, signed with Norway (2006), Switzerland (2012), the Republic of Serbia (2013) and Ukraine (2015), which enable them to participate in EDA’s projects and programmes although they are non-EU members. The Head of the Agency is responsible for negotiating those arrangements according to directives set by the EDA Steering Board.
