The U.S. Army announced last week that a new Multi-Function Aiming Light (MFAL) is tested, reported Shephard Media.
With the help of the new MFAL it is expected soldiers to acquire and hit targets more quickly and effectively, which is one of the fundamental skills to be acquired by any infantry soldier. Tests from the beginning of this year have shown that the response of soldiers is three to five seconds faster than without the MFAL.
The new MFAL involves both infrared and visible aiming lasers and thus enabling soldiers to easily engage targets during night and day. It is more powerful in comparison to its previous versions although it is smaller and lighter. Lithium batteries allow operation of about 6 to 8 hours, which is the typical duration of a patrol.
The M4 MFAL daytime range is up to 200m in sunlight, and the IR beam reaches 600m at night.
Another good thing about the MFAL is that it is not needed users to look through a night vision scope, so one can fire from any position, because the beam aligns with the bore and points to the target.
The plans of the Army are to purchase a number of MFALs for its M4 carbines and M16 rifles.
