First Successful Tests for the British Army’s Land Ceptor

On 28th May the UK Defence Ministry announced that the British Army’s Land Ceptor has been successfully tested for the first time as a whole system, including the cutting-edge SAAB Giraffe radar, near the Baltic Sea within a test fire range of Sweden, reported Shephard Media.

The system has been developed and manufactured by MBDA – a European developer and manufacturer of missiles for each branch of the armed forces (air, sea, land) within the scope of a £250 million contract with the trading entity and joint-defence organisation within the UK Ministry of Defence – Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S).

The Land Ceptor system consists of CAMM (Common Anti-air Modular Missile), a launcher vehicle, and two fire unit support vehicles. It is designed for protection against aerial threats and will be the stopping power within the Sky Sabre air defence system. Deployment within difficult terrains will not be problematic for that system, which is highly mobile and can be activated in less than 20 minutes.

“This trials firing is an important stepping stone towards bringing Land Ceptor into service with the British Army as part of the wider Sky Sabre air defence system. Land Ceptor performed as expected and the firing has helped us to verify innovative modelling of overall system performance,” explained Richard Smart, Director Weapons of DE&S.

Before Sky Sabre enters service in the early 2020s, the Land Ceptor system will be further developed and tested.
