The engine manufacturers Safran Aircraft Engines of France and UEC-Saturn of Russia have signed a framework agreement for upgrading the Beriev Be-200 aircraft with a new engine, reported Shephard Media.
“This partnership is a new opportunity to develop our synergies with Safran Aircraft Engines. Along with our French partner we have defined a very clear road map, allowing us to start the development of a new version of the SaM146 that will meet the requirements of the Beriev-200,” clarified the Director General of UEC-Saturn, Alexander Artyukhov.
The PowerJet SaM146 turbofan engine, used on the Sukhoi Superjet, is the new choice for the aircraft under the agreement signed on May 25, 2018. The company that has designed and manufactured the SaM146, PowerJet, is a joint venture between UEC-Saturn and Safran Aircraft Engines.
The multipurpose amphibious aircraft Beriev Be-200 is developed by Beriev Aircraft Company and manufactured by Irkut. Its capabilities are useful in fire fighting, search and rescue, maritime surveillance, and cargo transport. Its bearing capacity is 12 tonnes and it can transport up to 72 passengers.
The Be-200 is reported to be the first aircraft of this type to be fitted with two jet engines situated over the wings for decreasing the risks of water projection in fire-fighting missions.
