Units of the Bulgarian Armed Forces have participated in the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) mission in Afghanistan, established in December 2001, since February 2002, when located 10 km from Kabul. Since then, during the years, the number of the Bulgarian service men involved increased or decreased depending on the assigned goals and tasks in different regions of Afganistan.
As of today, it is on-going “Strategy for Transformation of the Participation of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Operation of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan” adopted by the Government of Bulgaria in 2011. According to that Strategy, the framework of the transformation of the Bulgarian contingent in Afghanistan includes two periods – from 2012 to 2014 and after 2014. The period after 2014 involves participation in the training of the Afghan National Security Forces. The Strategy is flexible and the Bulgarian involvement may be reconsidered accordingly.
