Ukraine allegedly loses MR-18 radar for detecting stealth aircraft

According to source reports, Ukraine may have lost a valuable asset: the MR-18 mobile surveillance radar. A video showing the destruction of an asset purported to be on the radar is circulating on the Internet. The posts accompanying the video did not specify when the attack took place or in which part of Ukraine.

The MR-18 is a cutting-edge radar developed by the Ukrainian industry, officially unveiled in 2017. Ukrainian sources highlight that the MR-18 is a highly mobile surveillance metric wave radar designed to enhance the detection radar field of air defense systems. Featuring a digital phased array, this advanced radar is capable of detecting stealth objects in the air, according to some Ukrainian sources.

There are claims about the type of Russian ammunition used. The missile in question is said to be an air-to-surface Kh-38. If the Russian Aerospace Forces [VKS or RuAF] fired this missile, it would mean the attack happened close to the front line, assuming the radar was located there. The Kh-38 has a limited range of only 40-45 km. Another possibility is that the radar was located deep behind Ukrainian forces, which raises the question of why the plane that targeted the radar was not attacked. The third and most likely possibility is that a different missile with a much greater range was used.

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

On February 21, 2022, Russia stated that its border facility was attacked by Ukrainian forces, resulting in the deaths of five Ukrainian fighters. However, Ukraine quickly dismissed these allegations, labeling them as ‘false flags’.

In a notable move on the same day, Russia announced it officially recognized the self-proclaimed areas of DPR and LPR. Interestingly, according to Russian President Putin, this recognition covered all the Ukrainian regions. Following this declaration, Putin sent a battalion of Russia’s military forces, tanks included, into these areas.

Fast forward to February 24, 2022, global headlines were dominated by a significant incident. Putin commanded a forceful military assault on Ukraine. Led by Russia’s impressive Armed Forces positioned at the Ukrainian border, this assault wasn’t spontaneous but a premeditated action. Despite the circumstances resembling a war, the Russian government refrains from using this term. They’d rather refer to it as a “special military operation”.
