Russian Su-30SM2 fighter gains range with R-37M LRAAM integration

Recent video footage circulating among Russian Telegram accounts reveals a Russian Su-30SM2 fighter jet taking off with two R-77-1 missiles and paired with two R-37M missile modifications. This is significant because it marks the first public instance of the Su-30SM2 being equipped with R-37M LRAAM missiles. Until now, it was believed that only the Su-57, Su-35, MiG-35 fighters, and the MiG-31 interceptor were capable of carrying this missile.

The Russian R-37M missile is a long-range air-to-air missile [LRAAM] engineered to target high-value air assets like AWACS, JSTARS, and tanker aircraft. It represents an advanced iteration of the older R-37 missile, boasting substantial enhancements in range, speed, and guidance systems. It stretches about 4.06 meters [13.3 ft] in length, with a body diameter of 0.38 meters [1.25 ft], and boasts a wingspan of 1.02 meters [3.35 ft]. Weighing in at approximately 510 kilograms [1,124 pounds], it’s a significant piece of hardware built for long-range engagements. 

When it comes to performance, the R-37M can cover distances up to 300 kilometers [186 miles] and reach blistering speeds of Mach 6. This combination of high speed and long range makes it capable of neutralizing enemy aircraft well before they pose any threat to Russian forces.
