RuAF conducted a night attack with RBK-500 SHOAB cluster bombs

Russian Aerospace Forces launched a new offensive using cluster aviation munitions against Ukrainian armed forces positions. The “Reports and Analyses of the Defense Ministry” channel on TG showcased video footage of Russian army aviation units carrying out these operations with the RBK-500, amidst the shroud of darkness.

Given that these operations are nocturnal, you might be surprised at how the action unrolls. The submunition strikes resemble a meteor shower, where the myriad of small explosions encapsulated within a single shell replicate the dazzle of celestial bodies plummeting at high velocity, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle.

However, unlike our stellar visitors, the unexpected arrival of this destructive rain of bombs leaves the Ukrainian forces taken aback. The exact location of this strike remains undisclosed. This is the second confirmed recording of submunition detonations, with the first one revealing the targeting of Ukrainian forces’ dugouts and trenches near Staromayorski.

TG’s “Fighterbomber” channel relayed information that Russian military pilots now have access to upgraded RBK-500 SHOB-0.5 aviation munitions. These Soviet-era fragmentation bombs have been enhanced with 5.5mm ball-shaped damaging elements, adding modules for planning and correction.

Let’s break this down: Once such a bomb has been deployed and reaches its point of detonation, upon hitting a target, shards of metal scatter across the terrain like a fan. This creates a gargantuan ‘blanket of destruction’ sprawled over the bombarded region.

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

On February 21, 2022, Russia stated that its border facility was attacked by Ukrainian forces, resulting in the deaths of five Ukrainian fighters. However, Ukraine quickly dismissed these allegations, labeling them as ‘false flags’

In a notable move on the same day, Russia announced it officially recognized the self-proclaimed areas of DPR and LPR. Interestingly, according to Russian President Putin, this recognition covered all the Ukrainian regions. Following this declaration, Putin sent a battalion of Russia’s military forces, tanks included, into these areas.

Fast forward to February 24, 2022, global headlines were dominated by a significant incident. Putin commanded a forceful military assault on Ukraine. Led by Russia’s impressive Armed Forces positioned at the Ukrainian border, this assault wasn’t spontaneous but a premeditated action. Despite the circumstances resembling a war, the Russian government refrains from using this term. They’d rather refer to it as a “special military operation”.
