Su-27 blocked USAF RQ-4B Global Hawk approaching the Russian border

In an event disclosed by the Russian Ministry of Defense on Sunday, October 15, a Su-27 fighter jet from the Russian military’s Air Defense Forces was dispatched to safeguard the integrity of the country’s national borders.

The trigger for this response appeared to be the approach of an airborne object from the Black Sea toward the Russian border. The Su-27 crew swiftly identified the intruder as an RQ-4B Global Hawk reconnaissance UAV belonging to the US Air Force. The Global Hawk promptly altered its course as the Su-27 drew closer. 

The official statement confirmed that the Russian aircraft returned safely to its base with no violations of the Russian border. It was emphasized that the Su-27’s flight complied with international regulations for flying over neutral waters.

Earlier on October 6, a similar incident took place over the Norwegian Sea where a Russian MiG-31 fighter jet intercepted a US Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft edging towards Russia’s border. Mirroring the later event, the American plane retreated as the Russian jet came closer. The operation of the MiG-31 was also confirmed to be within international airspace regulations.

About RQ-4B Global Hawk

The RQ-4B Global Hawk is an unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV] developed by Northrop Grumman for the United States Air Force. It is a high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance [ISR] missions.

The Global Hawk has a wingspan of over 130 feet and can fly at altitudes of up to 60,000 feet, allowing it to cover vast areas and stay airborne for extended periods.

In terms of its technical characteristics, the RQ-4B Global Hawk is powered by a single Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 turboprop engine, which provides it with a maximum speed of around 357 knots [410 mph].
