Russian Army began using modernized 155mm Krasnopol-M2 projectiles
In one of the videos of the Ministry of Defense, an artillery projectile, identified as Krasnopol-M2, falls into the frame. Krasnopol-M2 differs significantly from its predecessor.

- Extremely rare close-up photo of the FAB-500 bomb before it was used
- Russia is sending more tanks carrying TNT and bombs to Ukraine
- Russia has begun offering KOMAR naval air defense system for export
For example, Krasnopol-M2 uses an automated introduction of the projectile’s flight program, which reduces the possibility of errors in its preparation for launch.
Another advantage is the ability to make the trajectory independent of each other through the inclusion of the components of the control compartment [rudders], which expands the performance characteristics of the complex and allows you to hit targets at heights and recesses
Last but not least, the Krasnopol-M2s have an increased firing range of 20-26 kilometers and a new semi-active laser homing head. Previously, the modernized Krasnopo-M2 rounds did not get on camera, but now we can confidently talk about their active use at the front.
About Krasnopol-M2
The Krasnopol-M2 uses a laser guidance system to accurately hit its target. The shell has a range of up to 20 kilometers and can hit targets with a high degree of accuracy, even in adverse weather conditions.
The Krasnopol-M2 has a weight of 45.5 kg and a length of 1.4 meters. It has a high-explosive fragmentation warhead that can penetrate up to 130mm of armor. The shell is also equipped with a self-destruct mechanism that ensures it does not pose a threat to civilians or friendly forces.

The Krasnopol-M2 is considered to be one of the most advanced artillery shells in the world and is widely used by the Russian military. Its precision and accuracy make it a highly effective weapon against a variety of targets.
What damage does Krasnopol-M2 do?
The Krasnopol-M2 shell is designed to be used against a variety of targets, including armored vehicles, fortifications, and buildings. It is particularly effective against moving targets, such as tanks or other vehicles, as it can track and follow them as they move.
The damage caused by the Krasnopol-M2 shell depends on the type of target it hits. Against armored vehicles, it can penetrate the armor and cause significant damage to the vehicle and its crew. Against fortifications and buildings, it can create a hole or breach in the structure, allowing friendly forces to enter or providing a new line of sight for artillery fire.
Krasnopol-M2 vs Excalibur projectiles
The Krasnopol-M2 and Excalibur projectiles are both precision-guided munitions designed to increase accuracy and reduce collateral damage. They both use GPS guidance systems to improve accuracy and have a range of up to 40 kilometers. Additionally, both projectiles are compatible with a variety of artillery systems.

However, there are also some significant differences between the two projectiles. The Krasnopol-M2 uses a semi-active laser guidance system, which requires a laser designator to illuminate the target. In contrast, Excalibur uses a GPS guidance system, which does not require a laser designator and can be used in all weather conditions. Additionally, the Excalibur has a longer range than the Krasnopol-M2, with a maximum range of up to 57 kilometers.
Another difference between the two projectiles is their cost. The Krasnopol-M2 is significantly cheaper than the Excalibur, which is one of the most expensive artillery shells in the world. This cost difference is due in part to Excalibur’s more advanced guidance system and longer range.
The fact that the two projectiles are produced by two completely different countries and according to different standards also determines the last difference. I.e. there may be differences in availability and procurement processes for the two projectiles, depending on the country and military involved.
Which systems use the Krasnopol-M2?
The Krasnopol-M2 155mm round is primarily used by the Russian military in their artillery systems. Specifically, it is designed to be fired from the 2S19 Msta-S self-propelled howitzer and the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV, a newer self-propelled artillery system. These systems are used for long-range artillery support and can be deployed in a variety of combat scenarios.
However, it is important to note that the Krasnopol-M2 round is not limited to use in Russian weapon systems. It is a precision-guided ammunition that can be fired from any artillery system capable of firing 155mm rounds. This means that it could potentially be used in other countries artillery systems as well, assuming they have access to the ammunition.
As for the American equivalent of the Krasnopol-M2, there is no exact equivalent. The United States military does have its own precision-guided artillery shells, such as the M982 Excalibur and the M712 Copperhead, but these are not identical to the Krasnopol-M2. However, the US military has been working on developing new precision-guided artillery shells, such as the XM1113 and the Precision Strike Missile, which may be more comparable to the Krasnopol-M2 in terms of capabilities.
