VKS struck an airbase after an attempt to seize a Russian fighter
The Security Service of Ukraine [SBU] revealed that the Russian Aerospace Forces [VKS] carried out a devastating strike on the Kanatovo Air Base in Kirovohradsko. The attack was carried out in the summer of 2022.

On April 21 of this year, the SBU published photos. They show the destruction and damage done to Kanatovo Airport. The SBU says the missile strike killed the commander of the military unit and wounded 17 Ukrainian defenders. Two Air Force fighters were also completely destroyed. The runway and other equipment and buildings suffered significant damage.
This new information that comes from Ukraine is a consequence of actions that we wrote about some time ago. It is about the Ukrainians’ attempt to seize Russian fighter jets after contacting their pilots. Yahoo News then revealed the name of the Ukrainian coordinator, who went by the nickname Bogdan.
Bogdan has been in contact with Russian Su-34 fighter pilots and Tu-22M3 bomber pilots. In the two cases revealed to Yahoo News, Bogdan offered money to Russian pilots to land at a Ukrainian airport and hand over the aerial platforms to the Ukrainians. Later, however, both Russian pilots gave up. Yahoo News wrote in both cases that the conversations [messages] were intercepted by Russia’s military intelligence and GRU.

Most likely, it was precisely these conversations that helped Russian intelligence identify the airport to which Bogdan offered the Russians to hand over their planes. Then followed the missile strike in retaliation for the failed attempt to seize the planes.
In this connection, the SBU says in its announcement that the command was not aware of the intentions of the Ukrainians, who decided to seize the Russian planes. They acted illegally and outside their authority. It was their actions that led to the Russian missile attack on the airport.
According to the SBU, a former acting commander of one of the Special Operations Forces, Roman Chervinsky was one of the Ukrainians involved in the failed seizure attempt. “According to the materials of the investigation, his arbitrary actions led to an enemy missile attack on the Kanatove airport in the Kirovograd region in the summer of 2022,” the SBU said. He will be prosecuted under the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The SBU also says that “an investigation is currently underway. Comprehensive measures are being taken to bring all those involved to justice. The events are taking place under the process of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.”

“SBU and GUR MO immediately expressed their objections to such a plan, it was not agreed upon by other state bodies. In the end, the special operation hid many risks. But individual people decided to act at their discretion… I want to emphasize that there is no routine to help avoid responsibility. In my opinion, the scoundrel, whose actions led to the death of one Ukrainian soldier and the wounding of seventeen others, should suffer a well-deserved punishment,” stressed SBU head Vasyl Malyuk.
