10 Su-35s attack with bombs hidden beyond the range of air defenses

KYIV, UKRAINE — Ukraine is beginning to experience a problem with the new Russian air tactics. Ten Russian S-35s dropped 11 guided aerial bombs over the Sumy region, avoiding the range of Ukrainian air defense systems. This happened six days ago. On March 28, the Russians repeated the attack on Bilopylya – also in the Sumy region.

It should be noted that the Su-35 flies at a height avoiding the range of Ukrainian air defenses. Next comes the launch of the winged aerial bombs and this represents a new threat to the Ukrainian army. Analysis of this mess is made by none other than the spokesman of the command of the Ukrainian Air Force, Yuriy Ignat.

Yesterday, March 30, he spoke to Ukrainian television. According to him, the local air countermeasures systems have not been able to cope with the thwarting of the dropped air bombs. “They [the Russian Su-35s – ed.] drop them [the bombs – ed.] over the zone,” says the Russian military. Yuriy Ignat admitted that this was a new threat, describing what was happening as “500-kilogram bombs flying tens of kilometers…”.

Not for the first time

Reports of the use of aerial bombs began to arrive late last year. Since then, however, information has increasingly emerged, including photos of some unexploded bombs, which confirm that Russia is using a new tactic that is now not only a threat but also a major problem for Ukrainian defense.

The use of FAB-500M-62 is often talked about. It can be carried by almost any Russian fighter, not just the Su-35. To make it a wing bomb, the Russians sourced a set of guided wings. In principle, this is not new, the Western military also uses similar kits that turn dump bombs into smart aviation bombs.

BulgarianMilitary.com recalls that Ukraine also receives similar equipment [set of wings]. This is the so-called JDAM bomb. There are even reports that the Ukrainian forces have already used this bomb against positions of the frequent military company Wagner in the Bakhmut area. However, also in this area, which is currently the largest battle of all since the start of the war, the Russian Air Force has provided air support to Wagner by dropping FAB-500M-62 bombs. There is photographic evidence of this, as well as claims from both sides of the conflict.

A difficult situation

Ukraine is in a difficult situation. Although there are reports that a JDAM bomb has already been launched against Russian positions in Bakhmut, Kyiv’s forces are not in a very good position to launch this bomb. These are the words of Yuriy Ignat, who again called on the West to send combat aircraft.

“Right now, our Air Force needs a Western multirole jet fighter,” Ignat said on March 30 during the same TV interview. According to him, it is precisely such a combat aircraft that will help Ukraine to resist the Russian change in the tactical invasion offensive.

Ignat emphasized that, in addition to aircraft, the supply of more air defense systems must be continued. More recently, reports have begun to arrive that Kyiv is using Western-supplied small-diameter bombs [GLSDB]. Russian media reports claim that the Russians have begun intercepting them.

Not only that, in a new development, Russian troops have reportedly shot down a Ukrainian Grom-2 for the first time in the ongoing conflict.

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

On 21 February 2022, Russia claimed that Ukrainian shelling had destroyed an FSB border facility. Russia claimed that it had killed 5 Ukrainian soldiers. They tried to cross into Russian territory. Ukraine denied being involved in both incidents and called them a false flag.

On the same day, the Russian government formally recognized the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR. According to Putin not only in their de-facto controlled areas, but the Ukrainian Oblasts as a whole. Putin ordered Russian troops, including tanks, to enter the regions.

On 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine by Russian Armed Forces previously concentrated along the border. The invasion followed by targeted airstrikes of military buildings in the country, as well as tanks entering via the Belarus border.

Russia has so far not recognized the invasion of Ukraine as a “war”, although that is exactly what it is, claiming that it is a “special military operation”. According to the UN, a “special military operation” can only take place after a UN resolution. There is no such resolution. So this is an invasion and war against Ukraine.
