Kremlin seeks $90/day workers to build construct trenches in Crimea
MOSCOW, RUSSIA — Russia starts looking for carpenters and builders to build trenches and fortified positions in Crimea. This is clear from published job ads on the Avito website. This site is the Russian equivalent of eBay. Various options are offered, emphasizing that the work is in a risk area.
- 10+ Russian Su-30s began tactical rehearsals over Kaliningrad
- Iranians in Crimea, helping Russians how to use Iranian UAVs
- Russia fears new attacks in Crimea and moves its aircraft
According to published ads, remuneration starts from 2,000 Russian rubles [$26] up to 7,000 Russian rubles [$90] per day. Job offers come with different terms. Some offer accommodation and living in the area of the construction works, and some do not.
The ads say it’s open from morning to night, strictly alcohol-free, and drug-free. If a worker is caught drinking alcohol or using drugs, he is fired without receiving his remuneration. “The volume of work is very large, we have been working since January,” reads one of the ads.
There are people willing to work
Reference shows that there is a desire for work, especially from workers in the Crimea region and other occupied parts of Ukraine. According to the information, entire construction crews with experience offer their services. There is a crew of 80 people who have expressed their desire to start the construction work immediately. “With experience in building fortifications in the Zaporizhzhia region, we are ready to carry out work on the territory of the Republic of Crimea with a salary of 50,000 rubles [$653] per shift, we will find housing ourselves, we will provide food ourselves,” said the construction crew.
At the same time, it is clear that Russian logging and wood processing companies are also involved. According to a report, a Russian company in the Leningrad region produces “25-30,000 trench shields a month for 10,200 rubles [$26] each.” This company has already advertised that it is looking for new workers and carpenters.
Many contractors are currently advertising for laborers, carpenters, and foremen to work on trench construction around Krasnoperekopsk on the strategic Isthmus of Perekop. This is the main land route into Crimea and has been fortified and fought over for more than 2,000 years.
Dangerous place to work
Work in this area has become dangerous, sources say. According to reports, Ukrainian forces are using drones to bomb or shoot at excavators. There are reports of injured civilians as well as cases of workers being killed. According to various sources of information, a significant part of the workers at these sites are mainly emigrants from Central Asia and Africa. Some say they have been scammed and are not being paid what was claimed.
The construction work on the borders of Crimea is another signal that Ukraine’s spring counteroffensive will most likely be launched here. The fact that Russia is also paying a lot of attention to the peninsula speaks for this.
