Kalashnikov showed a new AFV’s non-detonating dynamic protection

MOSCOW, RUSSIA — The Steel Research Institute [SRI] of the Kalashnikov concern presented a new mounted system for the dynamic protection of light armored vehicles. The Russian state owned company Rostec says the news.

The equipment protects the vehicle from being hit by one-block grenades and anti-tank missiles from any direction, penetrating up to 500 mm of steel armor.

The properties of the complex ensure the absence of detonation of adjacent blocks when exposed to a projectile. Previously, the defeat of one block of dynamic protection led to the failure of several adjacent ones, which increased the area of the unprotected part of the armor. The new item significantly increases the survivability of armored vehicles on the battlefield.

Dynamic protection systems are often used in Russian armored vehicles. Most often in Soviet and Russian tanks. Western manufacturers do not install such protection systems. Germany experimented before installing a dynamic defense system. He later withdrew from these developments. Berlin considers dynamic armor dangerous.

Dynamic armor steps on pure physics. Imagine two equal-sized and parallel plates. Through the movement of the tank, the movement of the two parallel plates is obtained. The direction of movement of each plate relative to the direction of movement of its parallel neighbor is always opposite.

There is a charge between the two moving plates. Its purpose is to activate when the plates are hit by an anti-tank missile. Thus, dynamic protection actually ignites the charge of the anti-knock missile, long before the missile itself begins the penetration process.

The role of the opposite movement of the plates is that the missile does not hit the place from the tank with dynamic protection at an angle of 90 degrees. Almost always the rocket hits this spot at a different angle. Very often this is a 45-degree angle. The damage and effectiveness of a missile hitting 45 degrees are much less than that of a missile hitting 90 degrees.

The dynamic protection system is considered by the Russians to be the main advantage of Soviet/Russian tanks over Western ones. Especially in front of the German Leopard, after it became clear that it will represent a major part of the types of tanks intended to be sent to help Ukraine.

The integration of dynamic protection systems in Russian light armored vehicles is rare. The name of the vehicle category says it clearly – lightly armored. The war in Ukraine has apparently changed attitudes among the Russian military once they are ready to integrate such systems. However, this will increase the weight of the technique. I.e. maneuverability will be much less than before.

The question remains – will this innovation not cause an increase in the number of destroyed light armored vehicles of the Russian army in Ukraine?
