Watch: Russia repairs its tanks in abandoned buildings in Ukraine

MOSCOW, RUSSIA — The Ministry of Defense of Russia released a video about the repairs being carried out in Ukraine. It is about repairing heavy armored and tank equipment. For security reasons, the location of the makeshift workshop is not being disclosed.

The video shows the activities of a repair group from the Western Military District of Russia. Their work also includes installing dynamic protection, checking driving characteristics, refueling and technical fluids, and loading ammunition.

Artem is the commander of a repair company. He says in the brief interview that his brigade’s job is to restore damaged military equipment for the infantry, including tanks. “In the shortest possible time, specialists replace engines, gearboxes, control systems, communication, and automation,” says Artem.

The unit commanders emphasize that the servicemen of the repair units are working to the limit of their capabilities. The shift sometimes has to work 15-16 hours. And this is an initiative of the masters themselves.

The poor field conditions are impressive. In an abandoned commercial building, without windows, heavy repairs are carried out. The building is made of reinforced concrete. It is difficult to guess what the previous purpose of the building was. It may have been some agricultural site. It strongly resembles an abandoned cowshed.

The building lacks windows. Lighting is minimized again for security reasons. It relies primarily on daytime sunlight. The improvised repair depot does not have a technological floor. All repairs are carried out on mud, sand, and reinforced concrete debris.

A strong impression is made by the lack of technological and specialized equipment. There are improvised lifting machines to raise the engines of combat vehicles. Almost everything is done by hand using the listed manual repair kits. Realistically, with this lack of technological equipment, losing a piece of kit to a repair crew member is the equivalent of a soldier losing a weapon.

The heavy-land equipment recorded in the video is in a rather deplorable condition. You can see a lot of worn tracks on the tanks, armor, engines, etc. It becomes clear that, in addition to tanks, armored personnel carriers, cargo trucks, and other tracked military equipment are being repaired in the improvised repair shop.

The Russian Ministry of Defense also says that the “guys” [members of the repair groups] “understand that the faster serviceable equipment arrives at the front line, the more effectively our fighters will carry out their combat mission.”
