Successful firing of a 120mm Morser mortar at 2,000m above sea level
BERLIN, GERMANY — The German army conducted training artillery firings at an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level in heavily snowed and poor meteorological conditions. The official Twitter account of the German army reports on them.

The training was held at the Lizum military training area. The German troops who conducted the training shootings were from Mountain Infantry Battalion 233 [Gebirgsjägerbataillon 233] of the Bundeswehr.
The mortar that has performed successfully at 2,000 altitudes is the Morser 120 mm. According to the publication, the exercises were aimed at testing the combat capability of the mortar in difficult terrain and extreme weather. The mortars caused powerful explosions during the firing. Shared photos show that they were transported to the range in an all-terrain vehicle.
What is Mörser 120 mm?
The 120 mm mortar is a high-angle, muzzle-loading weapon and primarily supports infantry engagement against area targets. In addition to explosive rounds, it also fires signal rounds to illuminate the battlefield and smoke rounds that make it difficult for the enemy to see.

The 120 mm mortar is fired from either an M113 transport vehicle or transported by Wolf-type all-terrain vehicles and then deployed on a base plate. The high-angle weapon can also successfully fight light and unarmored vehicles.
The 120 mm mortar consists of the barrel, the bipod with roller carrier [M113] or ground spur [separate], the base plate, the PERI-R16A1 panoramic periscope, and the fixed collimator K12mA2.
Mountain Infantry Battalion 233
Mountain troops belong to combat troops. Their tasks, mode of combat, and principles of use correspond to those of the Jägertruppe [hunter squad]. Together with fighters and paratroopers, they belong to the genus of infantry.
Their training and equipment allow them to fight enemy infantry in built-up or heavily wooded terrain. Mountaineers, however, are particularly suitable for fighting in difficult-to-access terrains, in mountains, at high altitudes, and in extreme climatic and weather conditions.

Their state-of-the-art equipment ranges from personal ski equipment to Hägglunds snow vehicles. Supply depends on terrain, weather, and enemy threat from motorized vehicles or helicopters.
In 1981, the 233rd Mountain Infantry Battalion was formed from the 221st Mountain Infantry Battalion. From October 2021 Lt Col Bastian Steeves leads Mountain Infantry Battalion 233.
