Russia will launch a Zircon missile during an international exercise

MOSCOW, RUSSIA — The Russian frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov” will conduct a training-combat launch of a hypersonic missile Zirkon during international exercises. This was announced on Friday, February 3, by a source of the TASS agency.

“In the course of the upcoming exercise in February with the navies of South Africa and China, for the first time during such an event, an episode with a training-combat launch of the hypersonic Zircon from a ship will be practiced,” the source said. It is noted that this will be the first case of using Zircon in international exercises.

Previous tests

Earlier, on January 25, the frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov” following the training situation worked out the organization of a missile strike with a hypersonic missile Zircon against a sea target in the western part of the Atlantic Ocean. simulating a mock-up of an enemy ship located at a distance.

The next day, Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said that Admiral Gorshkov’s crew was working professionally and there was no reason to worry about its Zircon missiles.

Previously, on January 10, the crew of the frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov” conducted training firing on an enemy model in the Norwegian Sea. The exercises were conducted using a computer simulation of the tactical situation. The sailors also practiced repelling enemy air attacks.

Into service

On January 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in the commissioning ceremony of the frigate “Admiral Gorshkov”, carrying hypersonic missiles Zirkon. The president called the start of the ship’s military campaign a significant event.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who also took part in the ceremony of accepting the ship into combat service, in turn, said that the frigate will go on a campaign in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. The main efforts of the frigate’s crew will be aimed at countering threats from Russia, Shoigu said.

“Admiral Gorshkov” refers to the project 22350 frigates. It joined the Russian Navy in July 2018. In December 2022, the ship made an inter-fleet transition and arrived at the main base of the Northern Fleet – the city of Severomorsk – after scheduled repairs at the Kronstadt Naval Base plant.
