Abrams SEPv4 is being prepared for lethality and survivability tests

WASHINGTON, US — 2023 will be a key year for the US Army for the Abrams SEPv4 project. In the coming months, the approval of several plans is expected, as well as the execution of several tests. The Director, Operational Test and Evaluation [DOT&E] provides more information on what is to come.

The Abrams M1A2 System Enhancement Package Version 4 [SEPv4] is an incremental upgrade to the Abrams M1A2 SEPv3. The Army intends for the Abrams SEPv4 to improve lethality and survivability. This will be achieved primarily by integrating technologies into the platform’s optics and fire control system. This way it will increase the effectiveness of the M1147 Advanced Multi-Purpose Round.

Now the Army is writing the Abrams SEPv4 Test and Evaluation Master Plan which they intend to submit to DOT&E for approval by the middle of this year.

Next months

In the first half of 2023, the Abrams SEPv4 will perform Full-Up System-Level testing, exploitation testing, Controlled Damage Experiments, and Modeling and Simulation [M&S]. For this purpose, DOT&E recommends an operational test of adequate fire. Doing so will evaluate the tank’s performance, suitability, and survivability, DOT&E says.

SEPv4 upgrades

Abrams M1A2 SEPv4 includes quite a few upgrades. The tank will have an Improved primary gunner’s sight unit [GPS] with the 3rd generation. Forward-looking infrared link [3GEN FLIR], as well as an improved laser range finder [LRF] and color day camera, are envisaged.

The SEPv4 also includes an improved commander’s primary sight with 3GEN FLIR, an LRF with a laser pointer, and a color day camera. The tank has an improved lethality by providing the ability for the fire control system to digitally communicate with the new M1147 advanced multi-purpose round.

The expected version of the tank will also have improved firing accuracy by installing a weather sensor. SEPv4 will have improved onboard diagnostics, an improved thermal management system, and an improved laser warning receiver system.
