Watch: Tank battle between five tanks in Ukraine at a 500m distance

MOSCOW, RUSSIA — Russian media Izvestia published a video of a unique ground battle between tanks. Two Ukrainian and three Russian tanks met at a distance of 500 meters. Logically – a tank duel followed, just like in the PlayStation game “World of Tanks”. [If the video is not available in this article, watch it on our Telegram account]

The direct clash was on the ground in Donbas. The drone video [most likely a Russian drone] was published on January 7th. There is no record of when the battle took place, but our military expert consultant suggested that it took place in the first week of January.

How was the battle conducted?

A Russian serviceman was invited by RIA Novosti to comment on the battle. It is clear from his account that the Russian tanks were the first to notice the enemy. Then one of the three tanks deviates from the asphalt road. The forest belt goes off-road while the other two continue on the road. Their [both tanks] task is to divert the attention of the Ukrainian tanks from a third tank.

At the same time, the two Ukrainian tanks are located in another off-road forest belt. They spot the two Russian tanks [on the asphalt road] and open fire on them. On the flank of the Ukrainians, the third Russian tank [which has deviated] is approaching. As it emerges from the cover of the forest belt, the third Russian tank immediately opens fire on the one Ukrainian tank. The Ukrainian tank that was shot at was destroyed. The second retreats, realizing that he is outnumbered three to one.

500 meters distance

The Russian military “commentator” says that such a tank battle is very difficult. Especially, he says, if you consider that the battle takes place at a distance [or radius in diameter] of 500 meters.

The Russian serviceman says his colleagues have chosen a very “smart tactic”. Such actions are very difficult and scary, says the soldier. The three Russian crews should be given credit for taking risky actions. Everything depended on the speed of the reaction and the first precise strike of the third tank.

Offensive in Donbas

The tank battle that took place between Ukrainian and Russian tanks confirms a claim of Russian sources. Although it is difficult to determine the types of tanks in the video, a Russian source claims that one or both of the three Russian tanks are model T-90M.

If the claim turns out to be true, it means that the T-90M is indeed very effective from a closed position, where it can fire as regular artillery or with direct fire. BulgarianMilitary.com wrote about the new Russian T-90M tank, citing two Russian tank commanders. They expressed this opinion by also saying that the T-90 has a better fire control system and a network of electro-optical systems to track and attack the enemy.

There is no information on exactly where in Donbas the tank battle between the five tanks took place. But Russian sources claim that “Russian tanks have recently been firing more frequently, as an offensive against the positions of the armed forces of Ukraine has begun along the borders of the Donetsk People’s Republic [DNR].”

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

On 21 February 2022, the Russian government claimed that Ukrainian shelling had destroyed an FSB border facility on the Russia Ukraine border, and claimed that it had killed 5 Ukrainian soldiers who tried to cross into Russian territory. Ukraine denied being involved in both incidents and called them a false flag.

On the same day, the Russian government formally recognized the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR as independent states, according to Putin not only in their de-facto controlled areas, but the Ukrainian Oblasts as a whole, and Putin ordered Russian troops, including tanks, to enter the regions.

On 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine by Russian Armed Forces previously concentrated along the border. The invasion followed by targeted airstrikes of military buildings in the country, as well as tanks entering via the Belarus border.

Russia has so far not recognized the invasion of Ukraine as a “war”, although that is exactly what it is, claiming that it is a “special military operation”. According to the UN, in which Russia has its permanent representation, for military action to be defined as a “special military operation”, it must have a resolution issued by the UN. There is no such resolution, which automatically defines the military actions of the Russians as an invasion and war against the citizens of Ukraine.
