Ukrainian Su-24, Su-27, MiG-29 and two Su-25s shot down in one day
MOSCOW, RUSSIA — The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced that on January 8, the Russian Air and Space Forces [VKS] shot down five Ukrainian warplanes. It is about one Su-24 attack aircraft, one Su-27 supermaneuverable fighter aircraft, one Mig-29 fighter jet, and two Su-25 jet aircraft, the Russian Ministry announced.
Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Su-27 was shot down over Lozovoe, Kharkiv region. The other four aircraft were shot down over Izyum, Kharkiv Oblast, the villages of Mykolapoliye, Novi Donbas, and Veselee in the Donetsk People’s Republic [DNR].
In the past hours over the weekend, there was a ceasefire announced by Moscow. General Konashenkov announced that the five Ukrainian warplanes were downed after the ceasefire was lifted.
Ukrainian drone attack
In recent hours, there has been a Ukrainian drone attack. This was announced by Moscow. Mr. Vladimir Rogov, chairman of the movement “We are with Russia” announced this information also today, January 8.
According to his statement, the drones were tasked with attacking Russian positions in Melitopol, Zaporizhzhia region. Mr. Rogov said that Russian air defenses managed to neutralize the Ukrainian attack.
Ceasefire
From 12:00 Moscow time on January 6 to 00:00 on January 7, Russia imposed a ceasefire along the entire line of contact in Ukraine. During this time, the Ukrainian military carried out intense shelling of populated areas and Russian positions.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian armed forces attacked residential areas in Donetsk. The MoD says the enemy used salvo fire systems.
At this time, there is no official confirmation from Ukraine regarding Russia’s statement about the downed five planes. Only a photo of the downed Ukrainian MiG-29 appeared on the network. The pilot was able to eject. Information about the MiG-29 is unofficially confirmed by Ukrainian accounts on social networks, posting the same circulated photos.
2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

Russia has so far not recognized the invasion of Ukraine as a “war”, although that is exactly what it is, claiming that it is a “special military operation”. According to the UN, in which Russia has its permanent representation, for military action to be defined as a “special military operation”, it must have a resolution issued by the UN. There is no such resolution, which automatically defines the military actions of the Russians as an invasion and war against the citizens of Ukraine.
