Slovakia received the first Leopard already this year, the rest should be sent next year. Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nagy said the value of the equipment to be transferred to the country is over 100 million euros.

Along with the armored vehicles, spare parts must arrive and personnel training must be carried out. According to German officials, the tanks were repaired and upgraded before being sent to Slovakia.

The military has already announced that as part of this “circular exchange”, the armed forces received 30 BMP-1 tracked infantry fighting vehicles from Slovakia. Slovak BMP-1s were transferred from the mobilization reserves of the Slovak army. This armored vehicle was withdrawn from use by the Slovak Army and was in storage.

Leopard 2A4

The Leopard 2 is a German main battle tank manufactured by the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann concern. This tank is the most common among NATO countries. Over the entire production period, more than 3,200 tanks of this type were produced in various modifications, which are used all over the world.

The Leopard 2A4 is a serial version of the modification of the German Leopard 2 tank, produced in 1985-1987.

The tank underwent a major modernization and at that time underwent significant changes: the machine received a drastic improvement in the armor protection of the tower, additional measures were taken to increase the survivability of the crew and a new fire control system was installed. Due to the increase in the level of armor protection, the weight of the tank increased to 55 tons.

The tower and tank body are welded. Third-generation combined armor was used in the design of the armored hull and turret. The fighting compartment of the tank is lined from the inside with a Kevlar pad, which should stop secondary fragments in the event of armor penetration.

Weapons and equipment

The Leopard 2A4 is equipped with a 120-mm Rh-120 smoothbore gun of the Rheinmetall company with a length of 44 calibers. The main projectiles of German tanks are the DM43 armor-piercing subcaliber projectile and the DM12 cumulative fragmentation projectile. The gun is paired with a 7.62mm MG3 machine gun. Another MG3 is in the turret above the loader hatch.

The tank is equipped with thermal imaging and infrared sights for night vision. The commander is equipped with a PERI-R-12 panoramic periscopic sight with a stabilizer. The tank commander can independently direct the gun in case of damage to the gunner.
