Spain buys HK416/417 assault rifles with a short piston system

MADRID ($1=0/94 Euros) — The Spanish Navy has contracted the German company Heckler & Koch with a budget of €1.5 million to purchase HK416 A5 and HK417 20 assault rifles and GLM A1 grenade launchers for the naval forces. The contract published on the Contract Platform does not specify the number of rifles and grenade launchers acquired.

The small arms manufacturer has seven months to deliver the new weaponry, until June 30, 2023, to be exact. The purchase was made through the Economic Management Directorate of the Army’s Logistics Support Headquarters.

In the case of the HK416 A5, it is already in service with the Naval Special Forces [FGNE], the Navy’s special operations unit. The plan is to expand this weapon to other parts of the Marine Corps. The HK416 A5 is a modular 5.56mm rifle with Picatinny rails on the front and the main mechanism for attaching flashlights, grips, or laser pointers, among other accessories.

Designed for all types of combat situations, it has a short piston system to reduce heating and dirt entering the weapon. It is the basis of the other assault rifle the Navy just purchased, the HK417, in 7.62mm caliber. The HK416 is used in neighboring countries such as Portugal – in their special operations forces – and also in France, which chose this model to replace the Fama assault rifles of its armed forces.

The Spanish marines will also receive GLM [Grenade Launcher Module] grenade launchers, which allow the firing of 40 mm projectiles. The GLM can be attached to the handguard of HK416 and HK417.

Purchase of machine guns

Thus, the Navy continues to purchase light weapons for the Marine Corps. It has also acquired through various contracts over the past year almost a hundred light and medium machine guns [5.56 mm and 7.62 mm], plus accessories. The last order for 30 units was produced last October.
