The Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Mr. Oleksii Reznikov, personally confirmed the delivery via a tweet on his official Twitter account. “The 4th brother in the Long Hand family, LRU from France, has arrived in Ukraine! The Ukrainian army now is even more powerful for deterring and destroying the enemy. That is a visible result of the friendship between the President of Ukraine Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky and the French President Mr. Emmanuel Macron. I thank Mr. Sébastien Lecornu, the government, and the people of France”.
According to information from sources, France has 13 LRU M270 systems in service. Delivering the fourth such system to Ukraine means the French military is left with nine available.
LRU stands for [Lance Roquette Unitaire – Unitary Launch Rocket]. This is the French version of the American M270 MLRS system. A three-man crew operates the system, consisting of a driver, gunner, and commander. The modifications to the M270 for France consisted of a new fire control system and the system’s ability to fire a completely different type of guided munition.
Both the American and French versions of the M270 are transported by Bradley chassis. The chassis is chain driven. Each French LRU system can fire a total of 12 guided munitions located in the launcher at the rear of the chassis.
